Plastic Milk, anyone?

Plastic Milk, anyone?

Ever heard of milking infant’s milk for profit?!  Escapes me!  Well, China’s Cabinet has ordered an all-out effort to save babies poisoned by contaminated milk powder which has so far claimed the lives of four infants.  More than 6,000 others have fallen ill.

Eighteen people have been arrested for their roles in the contamination of milk with the industrial chemical melamine.  The State Council also ordered stringent checks on the dairy industry as it found that aside from regular powdered milk, yoghurt and ice cream were also affected.

Melamine is normally used to make plastics but has been used to boost the apparent protein content of watered-down milk.  Chinese press reports said the scam had been going on for years, with China’s chaotic and corrupt food safety system unable either to detect or prevent it.
